Sister Mary (Catherine Angela) Clancy (1935-2021)

Sister Mary was a fun-loving person who was always eager to help others. Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Alfred and Marguerite (Shaughnessy) Clancy. In 1953, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as Sister Catherine Angela.

She graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston with a degree in Latin. Later, she earned master's degrees in Religion and Education from Fairfield University, and in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) from UMass Boston.

Sister Mary loved teaching, and served at many schools including St. Joseph School, Boston; Holy Rosary School, Lawrence; St. Joseph School, Salem, New Hampshire; Presentation School, Brighton, Mass.; St. Patrick School, Lowell, Mass.; and St. Mary School, Lynn, Mass. She had a special love for the ministry of teaching students new to the U.S. who wished to learn English, and she taught ESOL at the Notre Dame Education Center.

She loved watching the Boston Celtics play and was a big fan of the Red Sox. In her final years she expressed great gratitude for the help and care she received.

Sister Mary died on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was 85 years old, and had served as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur for 68 years.

Sister Mary leaves her sister, Sister Eleanor Clancy, SNDdeN of Boston, nephews, and her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She was predeceased by her sister, Jane Clancy and her brothers, John and Alfred Clancy, Jr.

Sister Mary's funeral was held on Friday, December 3, in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. She is buried at Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery in Worcester.
